Controls on the altitude of Scandinavian cirques: What do they tell us about palaeoclimate?

چکیده

Cirques are glacially eroded, bowl-shaped depressions, characterised by steep headwalls and flat or overdeepened floors. Given their association with past glaciers, cirques sometimes used as proxies for palaeoclimate. However, shaped over multiple glacial cycles, usefulness palaeoclimate indicators therefore remains open to question. In this paper, we map 3984 glacier-free across the Scandinavian Peninsula analyse variations in cirque floor altitude (CFA). We explore relationships between CFAs aspect, latitude, longitude, distance coast. test validity of using through comparison equilibrium-line altitudes (ELAs) 513 modern glaciers. Results indicate that both cirque-glacier ELAs decrease latitude vary being generally lowest on east-facing slopes. clearest strongest trend glacier is an increase elevation from coast (i.e., ‘inland’). This likely indicates similar climatic gradients, particularly inland reduction precipitation, acted regulate former sites initiation (reflected CFAs) ELAs. would imply a useful proxy note reflect general topography region (with increasing elevations moving inland), history area (indirectly linked palaeoclimate) may have played role regulating where formed. For these reasons, suggest palaeoclimatic interpretations derived should be treated caution.

Blinking fluorophores: what do they tell us about protein dynamics?

The ability to detect emission from a single fluorophore presents a powerful tool to probe the dynamic properties of protein molecules during their interactions with ligands. Here, different classes of experiments are reviewed and a distinction is drawn between experiments that monitor signals from a large number of proteins, one molecule at a time, from those that follow a single protein molec...

ATM-related genes: What do they tell us about functions of the human gene?

Every time a cell divides, it must duplicate and segregate its chromosomes. Eukaryotic cells carry out these processes with remarkable order and fidelity. For example, in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, chromosome loss occurs at rates of only-10-5 per cell division. This precision is achieved at four levels. First, chromosomes bear replication origins, centromeres, and telomeres, cis-acting...

Gamma ray lines : what will they tell us about SUSY ?

Neutralino dark matter can be indirectly detected by observing the gamma ray lines from the annihilation processes χχ → γγ and χχ → γZ. In this paper we study the implications that the observation of these two lines could have for the determination of the supersymmetric parameter space. Within the minimal supergravity framework, we find that, independently of the dark matter distribution in the...

What Do Laboratory Experiments Tell Us About the Real World?

An important question facing experimental economists is whether behavior inside the laboratory is a good indicator of behavior outside the laboratory. We begin with a model that assumes the choices that individuals make depend not just on financial implications, but also on the nature and extent of scrutiny by others, the particular context in which a decision is embedded, and the manner in whi...

What do random matrices tell us about the brain?

To make optimal use of experimental data on the anatomy and physiology of brain circuits, and to account for the effects of plasticity and modulation on behavior, we must understand the relationship between the synaptic connectivity and neuronal properties, and the activity that these properties produce at the network level. Given detailed knowledge of the properties of a complex network, can w...
